Health officials have known of the new viral strain (actually a mutation of Type A influenza strains predominant in the U.S. in the 1950s) only since June, when the first cases were confirmed in Taiwan. Pharmaceutical companies, which had already manufactured a single-shot flu vaccine that is effective against three known and anticipated strains -- A/Chile, A/Mississippi and B/ Ann Arbor -- were forced to rush a separate A/Taiwan vaccine into production. Though no one knows how serious this season's attack will be, influenza generally kills 20,000 to 40,000 Americans in a single winter, more victims than AIDS...
There seemed to be the ingredients for some old-time demagoguery in this fall's election. The economic strain was palpable, from the Texas oil patch through the heartland cornfields to the Piedmont textile mills. Toss in the problems of Rocky Mountain mining, the timber woes of the Northwest, and despair in the Rust Belt and there was plenty of material for a latter-day rawboned, loudmouthed populist. Thus invited, none came to the party. There was a good deal of personal mudslinging, but of such limited imagination and low quality as to be totally forgettable...
...have the pitch of stretched truths. On an eight-story tower, a mystery man collects dust that he claims comes from the stars. Faussone tells of a job in the tropics where one of his helpers was an ape: "He wanted to play, but he didn't want to strain himself. But I tell you, those other three goons didn't do much more than he did, and at least he wasn't afraid of falling...
Where did the magazine get its information? The publication is known to have close ties to Syria. That country and Iran are formally allies, but their relationship has come under increasing strain. One reason is their rivalry for influence over Islamic Jihad and Hizballah, which Iran is clearly winning. The assumption in the Middle East as well as in the U.S. is that the Syrians somehow got wind of both the U.S.-arranged arms shipments to Iran and McFarlane's mission. They may have leaked the story in order to torpedo the potential relationship between the U.S. and moderate elements...
...strain between the all-over pattern and the real motifs gives his Nice paintings their special vitality. But the strain was real, and in extreme cases, like Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Ground, 1925-26, it induces an almost palpable discomfort. The sheer congestion of pattern -- rococo mirror, painted wallpaper, overlapping rugs, Ming blue planter -- dismays the eye while seducing it, and the architectonic forms of the nude halt the whirling of color like a massive log brusquely jammed in the gears of a machine. This is the creation not of a complacent man but of an artist...
