...ballad which affected me most was probably that of Zahran, the hero of Denshway. Denshway was only five kilometers away and the ballad dealt with a real incident. British soldiers were shooting pigeons in Denshway, the ballad goes, when a stray bullet caused a wheat silo to catch fire. Farmers gathered and a British soldier fired at them and ran away; they ran after him and in the ensuing scuffle the British soldier died. Many people were arrested. Scaffolds were erected before sentences were passed; a number of farmers were whipped, others hanged. Zahran was the hero of the battle...

Christmas, on the other hand, has always maintained itself as a traditionalist's stronghold. Society may have dictated I am too old to visit the Macy's Santa, but my mind hasn't quite accepted the fact. I'm perfectly willing to take any stray sibling or neighborhood child, (in my geriatric neighborhood, quite a find) to see the Big Guy. At one point, I could even catalogue which department store Santa gave the best goodies...

...intended to be harsh. I had to attend the Sunday matinee performance at which half the audience was either over seventy or under ten. They are not particularly responsive age groups: one not prone to belly laughs, the other a little slow on puns. But even septegenarians, kindergardenians and stray matinee-goers--in the words of W.S. Gilbert himself--beg, desire, demand a show with gusto. Still, this production of The Gondoliers is enjoyable. On bad days, it is at least beautiful pictures set to well-performed music. On good ones, it might truly sparkle. And that's more...
