...have to wait for a tell-all book about U Turn, which John Ridley adapted from his novel Stray Dogs. The movie dwells in the dry heat of Superior, Ariz., a town halfway between Phoenix and Hades. As Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn) speeds through in his '64-and-a-half Mustang convertible, a vulture picks at the carcass of a canine that looks meaner than the bird; even the victims here wear a scowl. That's Bobby: a part-time tennis player, full-time weasel who kicks cats and isn't much nicer to humans...

...reason for such urgency is that no matter how carefully a surgeon cuts out a malignant tumor, the few stray cancer cells that are inevitably left behind will begin to grow again. A recent expose in the Washington Post offered jaw-dropping statistics on the amount of wasted funds and government bloat. Washington spends more money and has more employees than any other city. Yet the high school dropout rate has passed...

...regional operating companies, a.k.a. the Baby Bells, are no longer sharing their database of phone numbers with Ma Bell. The upshot is that AT&T has assembled replacement services consisting of one subcontractor, Excell Agent Services in Phoenix, Ariz.; two of its own regional centers; and a few stray agreements with Baby Bells. Thus when you're in, say, Oregon calling to find a Florida number, your long-distance information operator is now likely to be in Phoenix; Scranton, Pa.; or Augusta, Ga. (MCI and Sprint still have agreements with the Bells--but that could change too once they start...
