Except for the barking of stray dogs, the Inlet is a quiet neighborhood, not because of its tranquillity but because of its gaps -- vacant lots where houses were razed and replaced by fields of pink clover, Queen Anne's lace and beer-bottle shards. Here and there are anachronistic gestures to elegance -- carved laurels in a window casement, a Victorian turret, delicate porch columns -- that lend the scene the haunted air of a horror-movie set. At times the Inlet seems just a bad joke. Standing over one bunker-style housing & project is a billboard touting one of developer Donald...

...with abandon. The surface seems to store light, like stone. It is opaque; you can't see through it or even into it. It is not about space. Besides, the inlaid, modular, even puzzle-like surfaces of Scully's recent canvases prevent the eye from roaming them too freely. A 16-year-old Palestinian girl was killed by stray bullets as she hid in her home. The Arab city of Hebron is a frequent target of Jewish raiders from nearby Kiryat Arba. Daily patrols of heavily armed settlers cruise the streets to prove they can still move freely around the city...

At the time of the massacre, many citizens were so incensed that the P.L.A. was being used against the people that they ambushed stray groups of soldiers with fire bombs, bricks, clubs, even bare hands. Later, outgunned and powerless, the resistance turned to words. In the shadow of the Beijing Hotel, a young man spotted a military helicopter hovering over Tiananmen and wrathfully wished destruction on it. "Fall down!" he cried. "Fall down!" Across...
