Harold Farberman is one of a group of contemporary composers who, in trying to bridge the gap between classical music and jazz, have jumped with something of a splash into what is called "the third stream." A former whiz-bang drummer with the Boston Symphony, Farberman concentrates on percussion in his compositions, uses other instruments sparingly. Only time would tell whether Castro was serious. Yet one thing is obviously clear. The steady stream of fleeing Cubans does nothing to polish the Communist image-either Castro's or that of his Soviet mentors. Since Jan. 1, 1959, more than 335,000 Cubans have gone into exile-one out of every 21 people on the island. The first to go was the upper class-the landowners and big businessmen. Says Michel Batisse, a French engineer who heads the IHD: "It may turn out that the most important results of the IHD will not be strictly scientific but the side effects. For the first time, and forever, modern civilization...

...this is undoubtedly our society's last chance to infuse into itself a stream of people whose moral vision has been--relatively, at least--preserved and sharpened by exclusion from opportunities for self-betrayal as well as advancement. The Negro is the only American whose loyalty to his country has not made him an accomplice in a succession of dubious enterprises from Cuba to Southeast Asia. If the vision of the Negro is sometimes distorted by hatred, it is seldom blurred by guilt...
