...hustled down to Washington. The machine that he and Jack had built had proved its mettle in a string of primary victories and at the convention. In the primaries the old, outmoded political organizations were bulldozed aside, the old, skeptical politicians brought into line or surrounded. But would the stream lined political harvester that had worked so efficiently and winningly in the furrows of Wisconsin and West Virginia and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena be adequate in the back forty of the entire nation...

...yellow plaster house with a red tin roof on the outskirts of Leopoldville, Colonel Joseph Mobutu, 29, bit his fingernails, answered the telephone, coped with a stream of visitors, and tried to keep his three children (aged five, three, and nine months) from crawling off with state papers. In a big, three-story, official residence near the river, bespectacled Premier Patrice Lumumba peered out curtained windows, occasionally shouted invented communiqués to passing newsmen, and cried defiance at the world. On a grassy hilltop overlooking the foaming Congo rapids, stolid President Joseph Kasavubu huddled in his modern-design palace...

Clear air turbulence is exactly what it sounds like: an airplane speeding through a cloudless part of the sky can be ripped apart by an invisible tempest. CAT is most often met just above or just below the 30,000-35,000-ft. jet stream - and modern aircraft like best the levels near the great, racing jet stream. It has been agreed that CAT is caused by wind shear -the "friction" between adjacent air masses moving at different speeds. Last week Joseph J. George, chief meteorologist for Eastern Airlines, told how this knowledge might be put to work to predict...

...forecast severe CAT, George studies weather data in search of above-and-below air layers that are being dragged violently past each other by the jet stream. He draws on a map the area where this vertical shearing is sufficiently intense. Then he scans the data a second time to see if any air masses on the same level are moving rapidly past each other. If this is the case, he marks another area on his map (see diagram). If the areas overlap, the overlap has the two necessary kinds of violent shear. It is therefore apt to be full...

...raced too briskly to the point; often he was guilty of oversimplification. But in happier moments (notably in press conferences and informal question-and-answer sessions), he impressed the experts with his detailed knowledge, eloquence and deft uptake. As the campaign surged into high gear, Kennedy left a jet stream of issues behind him (see box), along with the jagged seismograph of his public image. Getting into the swing of it, he proved that he can be as tough, skillful and attractive as any other candidate currently on the stump-and worthy of Dick Nixon's wariest respect...
