WHEN THE AUDIENCE files into the Old Library, the set for The Cradle Will Rock consists of only one object--an awkward cardboard-like streetlamp. The lights dim to blackness, a jarring piano theme begins, and quite suddenly the streetlamp switches on, illuminating a prostitute leaning against it. It is the first of many delicate and imaginative effects in a double-bill evening that provides more food for thought than most troupes could gracefully handle...
Only two members of the audience left early. One of those exited with some reflections on Lewis Carroll and life, while the other's departure prompted a discussion of his character and future course ("He's begging for change under a streetlamp on Brattle Street!" "He's copping out!"). There were only ten spectators to begin with, of course, mostly friends of the actors, and nobody ever found the bird Paul had promised would be the meaning of the play. The officer then flicks on the time switch, flicks it off when his quarry passes a second roadmark. Time is thus locked into VASCAR's computer. To measure the distance between the two reference points, the patrolman flips on the distance switch when he reaches the first point...
...develops a certain set of reactions to color. A pair of freedom workers walks down a street at night in Holly Springs to buy a late supper. A car edges slowly along the curb, and both workers gaze intently trying to see the passengers in the light of the streetlamp. One finally speaks, "'s okay, they're the right color." And as the car of Negroes passes, the two white freedom workers relax...
