...Crusius is perfectly right in assuming that we are in no danger from foreign invasion if we have adequate coast-defences. But what are adequate conast-defences? Does Mr. Crusius assume that we already have, or can possibly have within the next ten years, a navy of sufficient strength alone to stand guard over our enormous coast-line? For I neglect any mention of fortifications which we have or might build, as being perfectly useless in repelling an invasion. We must realize that we owe our present and somewhat false sense of security to England's navy, but England...
...Harvard Club hockey seven showed flashes of strength against the University in a 30-minute scrimmage yesterday evening at the Arena, and won by the score of 2 to 0. Clifford and Phillips were the main factors for the Harvard Club, the latter's speed and stick-work being especially effective. The University forwards took several long shots at the Harvard Club goal, but lacked the necessary "follow-through" to score. The team played very raggedly, getting out of position and offside frequently, and seldom passing effectively. This was particularly true in the case of the wings, who continue...
There are many men in the University who would be glad to aid in this work, but such a movement does not arise spontaneously from "the peepul." Leadership is required, and the Federation is the logical body to lead. It has had a long sleep, and should have its strength sufficiently recuperated. The time is ripe for a revival, for a renewal of the work to nationalize Harvard College...
...once Yale does not present much that is of value save certain lessons as to what not to do. The play as seen in action was sluggish and often stupid and showed a surprising lack of football knowledge. The Yale line had strength which was largely wasted in straight heaves of the old-fashioned sort. Here again a lesson may be learned from Harvard. The Harvard line play is a thrust rather than a heave. On defence the lineman is intent on getting through as soon as possible instead of carrying his opponent back with him. This enables...
...Percy '18 set up a new University strength test record for the year of 1442.4 points yesterday afternoon. This surpasses the total of 1227.1 made by A. J. Weatherhead '16 this fall, by 215.3 points, and is 61.4 points higher than the record of 1381 points made by H. R. Hardwick '15 last year. Sixty-one push ups, 30 pull-ups, 265 points on the back pull, 400 on the leg pull, 50 on each fore- arm and 642.4 points for the chest and upper arms contributed to the total...
