...Americans who've heard of it, cricket conjures up images of fastidious Englishmen in white outfits who scarcely break a sweat during "test" matches that stretch over five days--with regular breaks for tea! But the newest format of the game, known as Twenty20, is shorter than a Major League Baseball game, as fiercely contested as a National Hockey League match and between teams dressed more colorfully than the Los Angeles Lakers. For the spectators, there is rousing music between plays ... and cheerleaders...

...rotting wooden boats on the garbage-strewn beach at Al-Faw represent the last frontier at the far corner of southeastern Iraq. Barely 55 yards (50 m) across a narrow stretch of water known as the Shatt al-Arab - close enough to swim over - lies Iran, an elusive but increasingly intimate ally to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government, and the principal country the U.S. accuses of fueling violence and illegal militias in Iraq...

But the world has never needed Mandela's gifts - as a tactician, as an activist and, yes, as a politician - more, as he showed again in London on June 25, when he rose to condemn the savagery of Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. Cardamom is the queen of spices, and we're always carting around our kids to things...

Plugging that gap means tapping a university's endowment. That "is no different from U.S. universities," says Alison Richard, vice-chancellor of Cambridge. "But our endowment isn't sufficient, so it's a real stretch." Private donations invested by Yale University are currently worth some $23 billion; the endowment fund of rival Harvard is $35 billion. Dozens of other American universities boast funds valued at more than $1 billion. Even Britain's wealthiest universities are poor by comparison. The central endowment fund at Oxford is about $1.3 billion, and Cambridge's stands at roughly $2 billion. (The universities' individual colleges...
