Scientists are afraid that the relentless Halley's mania is bound to result in disappointment. At its closest, in March, the comet will still be 40 million miles away. Halley's may appear to stretch the length of the Big Dipper but probably will not be as bright. Scientists cannot predict the luminosity because each time the comet whips past the sun, it sheds varying amounts of the ice and dust that form its glowing tail. "All this hype is making people think they're going to see a massive apparition that will scare dogs and old ladies," says...
...magic he claims not to believe, toward "the longed-for father, the healer, the hero-priest, the benevolent all-powerful king." No sooner does Edward conceive this idea than he receives an invitation from Jesse's wife to visit Seegard, the artist's house near a deserted stretch of English seacoast. He arrives to find himself welcomed by the wife and two beautiful daughters, who look "like three young mediaeval princesses." They introduce him to the strange, monastic routines of daily life at Seegard, all dictated by the artist who mysteriously fails to appear and greet...
...home runs (including 18 grand slams), 6 ft. 4 in. of height--and now.810 on the Hall of Fame ballot. Prime Minister Shimon Peres has been hampered in his efforts to improve relations with Egypt by a minor but irritating border dispute. At issue is a 250-acre stretch of coastline along the Gulf of Aqaba named Taba, claimed by both countries on the basis of old survey maps. The Israelis completed their withdrawal from the rest of the occupied Sinai in 1982 under the terms of their peace treaty with Egypt. But they retained Taba, and in fact built a resort hotel on it. Peres has been ready to agree to an Egyptian demand for international arbitration...
...Brelis, reporting Horowitz's triumphant and poignant return to Moscow capped 20 hours of interviews and conversation with the virtuoso and his wife Wanda. It was by far the longest stretch of time Horowitz has ever agreed to spend with a journalist. "I usually cover wars, politics and disasters," says Brelis, "so this was a very different kind of assignment. Horowitz was pleased that I was not a musician. 'We can discuss politics,' he said. And we did. He has a remarkable, nimble mind. The hours with him and Wanda were like reliving not only the history of music...
