...India's Poor, Still Left Behind Thank you for the article "Subcontinental Divide," on the Indian economy, which is definitely experiencing a boom [Feb. 23]. As you reported, India's middle class is exploding in size, but unfortunately, there are millions of poverty-stricken people for whom the progress is meaningless. Much of India lacks even minimal infrastructure, and conditions are deplorable. Are the "happy new capitalists" enthusiastic enough to undertake developmental work in needy regions? What scares scientists most about H5N1 is that someone eventually will be stricken by the bird flu and a human flu at the same time, allowing the viruses to swap genetic material. The doctors said I'd never walk again. I was 9. I shocked everyone by recovering 18 months later.
