...Tape Blues It doesn't help that police morale is low countrywide after the government imposed a below-inflation pay deal on them; in May, officers voted to lobby the government for the right to strike, an entitlement they lost in 1919. They also complain that targets set by politicians encourage a statistics-driven culture in which minor offenses are followed up to inflate detection rates. Every incident, no matter how trivial, enmeshes cops in red tape when they could be out on the beat...
...think donors and receiving governments strike the right balance between food aid and development aid? Some humanitarian assistance is clearly required and we very much welcome it. But clearly a large percentage of this goes through all sorts of NGOs, and I am not sure whether the money is being spent in a manner that adequately promotes development. There are excellent NGOs, good ones, mediocre ones and good for nothing ones. [Then again], development is not going to happen on the basis of external assistance. But Indian intelligence and security experts are unaccustomed to seeing that charge being echoed by Washington, which has embraced Pakistan as a crucial ally in its "war on terrorism" despite concerns over the long-standing relations between the ISI and the Taliban and other extremist groups. Still...
Purity balls strike me as a contradiction in terms [July 28]. Dressing up children as adults and putting them in a mature environment focused on sexual behavior surely offers a glimpse of the very temptations these fathers are trying to forestall. I wonder how many of these men are involved in creating the society they are so fearful of for their daughters. Making a "vow before God" to protect the purity of another is presumptuous and in any case probably requires sainthood. I'll go with a purity barbecue for my daughter: in the sunshine, where God can find...
