I asked Wyatt Closs, from the Service Employees International Union - who, to my shock, had flown in from Washington just to make a presentation - what purpose this could possibly serve. He said a previous one-minute speech he gave ended a strike of security guards, since people in the room were friends with the real estate moguls the guards were picketing. I got the feeling he had made this exact same speech every few months to his D.C. bosses when he wanted a trip to California...
