...Monday nights, the Northwestern team sees a movie of its most recent game. On Tuesday nights, it sees a newsreel of its next opponent. Most spectacular ball carriers this year have been Steve Toth and Don Heap, It was Toth who made the touchdown that broke Minnesota's string of 21 victories three weeks ago (TIME, Nov. 9). Heap is a junior who, between high school and college, spent three years earning enough money for his tuition and gaining enough weight to be sure of making the varsity football team the first year he tried for it. While Clint Frank, considered by many grid followers as the outstanding back of the East, gives the starting backfield a slight edge, this advantage is overbalanced by the eight first-string backs which Coach Howie Odell has been able to provide for the game. Last summer five strings of such balloons, five in each string, were sent up periodically from San Antonio, Tex. to heights of 92,000 ft.(about 17½ miles). When the weakest balloon in the string burst, due to the thinning outside air, the rate of ascent of the other four was checked. When the second bag blew up, the remaining ones hovered practically stationary until a clockwork device released...
...usual punting and point kicking drill was followed by work on the dummies yesterday, one of the best blocking and tacking practices of the season. Pass offense was next on the docket, with the eight "first string" backs alternating passes against the C team. Two "Navy" team then took the field to give the Varsity defense a final checking. Kicking under pressure and signal running completed the afternoon's schedule...
