...disappointment ran through London's literary circles last week when it was revealed that Me Cheeta,, the just-published memoirs of the chimpanzee who starred in 11 Tarzan movies from 1934 to 1948, is actually the work of a ghostwriter, James Lever. Even before the "autobiography" appeared to a string of rave reviews, expectations for Me Cheeta, had been primed when it was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. Whether Cheeta's (or indeed Lever's) name will be forced from the list we shall see. But the attention might hasten the book's U.S. publication, originally and hopefully...
...happy one. Japan's financial sector imploded in the 1990s as bubbles in real estate and stock prices (sound familiar?) burst. Eventually, Japan's central bank drove interest rates to near zero to stimulate the economy. But it was, as the economists say, "pushing on a string." Banks were reluctant to lend because they needed to hoard capital to repair their balance sheets - just as they need to do now in the U.S. Economic growth slowed, and demand for the credit that was available diminished. But it's still too early to tell. A string of opinion polls shows that Californians are ready to embrace gay marriage. Of seven bipartisan, statewide polls cited by the Initiative & Referendum Institute at the University of Southern California law school since May, only one gives the advantage to supporters of Prop. 8. But that poll, by SurveyUSA, also happens to be the most recent; released...
...performed with light playfulness. The form of the movement is a simple scherzo and trio, one part more lively and one more sedate, and both were played with grace and beautiful phrasing. There was particularly good communication between the wind chorale theme and the pizzicato accompaniment of the strings, which gave a sense of dance to the entire movement. The third movement, a joyous “Nutcracker”-esque march, is the emotional highlight of the symphony. Although the brass became a little overpowering, the movement ended so strongly that the crowd burst into premature applause. After...
