Nothing has dented Rudd's popularity. The revelation earlier this year that, in 2003, he visited a strip club in Manhattan with New York Post editor Col Allan served only to color in a somewhat bland personality; to many, he was now a flesh and blood Aussie male. Nor did the release during the campaign of YouTube footage showing Rudd tasting his own earwax during a parliamentary debate in 2001 (he claims he was scratching his chin!) do him any discernible harm...

...Aube le Soir ou la Nuit (Dawn Dusk or Night) is about Sarkozy's recent electoral campaign. Another standout, Olivier Adam's A l'Abri de Rien (In the Shelter of Nothing), concerns immigrants at the notorious Sangatte refugee camp. France's Japan-influenced bandes dessinées (comic-strip) artists have made their country a leader in one of literature's hottest genres: the graphic novel. The rush was telling; however much Arabs may feel harassed by Israelis, they fear that annexation of East Jerusalem by the current thuggish Palestinian leadership would lead to a spillover of the chaos and murderous political feuds that plague the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with rival militias fighting over spoils in the holy city. A new "Berlin Wall," says Seidemann, would devastate those who live in East Jerusalem. The average yearly income on the Arab east side is $4,000. That is far lower than the $19,000 a year earned by a typical...

...ruling partnership between Merkel's center right Christian Democratic Union and the SPD, the two "volksparteien" that have ruled Germany in coalition since 2005. He may be best known outside Germany for his disparaging remarks in 2005 comparing hedge funds to "locusts" that descend on a country and strip it bare (a comment of which he remained proud, keeping a statue of the insect on his desk). But Müntefering was in fact a more centrist figure than many of his party colleagues. Newspapers referred to him as the "keystone" on which the grand coalition rested and the "hinge...

Hamas commanders saw the 200,000-strong Arafat memorial rally by as a provocation, a challenge to their rule in the Gaza Strip by rivals of the Fatah movement, loyal to President Abbas. Hamas routed Fatah fighters in Gaza last June, but Arafat's old militia still has many followers in Gaza, judging from the rally's size. Gaza sources also said that many Palestinians attended the memorial as a protest against Hamas's tightening control over Gaza, which has triggered international sanctions by Israel and the international community on Gaza's 1.5 million residents. Palestinians in Gaza face constant...
