...other liberal candidates, such as reformist politician Grigori Yavlinsky. But is the White House working to promote these candidates? Well, er..."What we will say to the Russian people repeatedly is not that you should vote for this candidate or that candidate," explains Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott. "That's their business. What we can do is say, 'Here is what the U.S. believes in; here is what the U.S. stands for; here is the kind of world that we hope Russia will work with us to build.' But Russia can do that only if it maintains a fundamentally...

...makes an absolutely arresting impression in almost every one of her scenes. The force of her talent gives the two "murder" sequences--when she informs a lover, "I killed you," with deadly and restrained passion--a drastically disproportionate significance. Meanwhile, START II, the chemical-weapons convention, nine bilateral investment treaties and other pacts are also languishing. This time the gun was a toy and the Prime Minister, whom Amir assassinated on the same spot 12 days before, was played by a policeman. Amir wore a white bulletproof vest, and a chain around his waist yoked him to police escorts while he coolly re-enacted the killing for official video cameras. "Murderer, die! Maniac! You piece of garbage!" shouted Israelis from behind the barricades...

Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott headed to Moscow to try to calm Russian anger over the NATO raids as Boris Yeltsin intensified his opposition. Yeltsin's government today branded the bombing runs "genocide" against the Serbs. Yesterday, Moscow called upon the Security Council to halt the raids. Sally Donnelly reports from Moscow that Yeltsin is playing to the home team, talking tough as Russian parliamentary election campaigns proceed. "The Russians are suffering from 'former superpower angst'," Donnelly says. "If the U.S. had become a lesser power, and Russia and Europe were ignoring the U.S. and intervening in a place...
