...This stroke is audacious and illuminating. What is a fairy-tale line doing in a story filled with accidents and misfortunes? It is alerting everyone to the presence of magic that was there all along, dogging the hero but also yanking him out of the rut of predictability. Cheever does not often introduce direct trappings of the supernatural; The Enormous Radio and The Swimmer violate physical laws, and a woman in The Music Teacher acts suspiciously like a real witch. By noon the Pontiffs body was laid in the frescoed splendor of the Clementine Hall in the Apostolic Palace. Romans and tourists formed a mile-and-a-half queue that wound around St. Peter's Square to pay then- respects to the Pope. At the bier two nuns in blue, overcome, rushed through a gap in the wooden...
Mork & Mindy (Thursday, ABC, 8 p.m. E.D.T.). Were it not for one inspired stroke of casting, this sci-fi sitcom would be indistinguishable from the rest of the kiddies' drivel aired by ABC at 8 each night. Robin Williams, a new young comic, sends Mork & Mindy into hyperspace. The show casts him in the role of Mork, a friendly alien who settles in Boulder, Colo., with Earthling Mindy (Pam Dawber), after leaving the planet Ork. It's a premise more appropriate to Saturday morning TV than prime time, but Williams transforms trivia into a tour de force...
