...Middle East "quartet." We also have a strong trading relationship. We would like Russia in the World Trade Organization. We have regular summits and dialogues with them at different levels. If you take any strategic partnership with any country, there will be some member states that will have a stronger or different relationship. The point about bringing the 27 together is that you have an established, coherent approach to that...
...supposed to be the moment Europe grew muscles. Last fall, after a decade of work to simplify policymaking and make the European Union more efficient at home and stronger abroad, the last few holdouts signed a 1,000-page document known as the Lisbon Treaty. There's currently a $27 billion lawsuit against Chevron - perhaps the largest ever such case concerning pollution - making its way through Ecuadorean courts, and a ruling is expected soon...
...Maliki's main rival is former Prime Minster Iyad Allawi's Iraqiya coalition, which also favors a stronger central government. Allawi's coalition is billing itself as a more secular alternative to the current government, and draws more support from Sunni groups, who are going to play a more significant role in this election than in 2005, when they boycotted the political process in protest of the American occupation. (See pictures of the U.S. troops in Iraq...
