Teacher's Lesson. Strong man of the corporal's guard defending the subdivision was Homeowner Theodor Repsholdt, a high-school teacher. "I am a resident of Deerfield and teach your children American history," said he. "I'm a Lutheran and I'm in favor of an integrated community." Catcalls from the floor: "Resign! Fire him." Repsholdt squared his shoulders, continued: "One thing is fortunate. If there is any shortage more acute than the shortage in housing, it is the shortage of teachers. I'm not frightened about losing my job." Repsholdt got a big hand...
Labor's leader, Hugh Gaitskell, had waged a buoyant campaign that left him unchallenged as party leader. In defeat he felt strong enough to pledge himself to "a vow of silence, self-imposed," while he "collected the voices" about what was wrong and what needed to be changed. But at his middle-class Hampstead home in north London, he chose to consult not with trade-union leaders, with whom he feels uncomfortable, but with fellow Oxford intellectuals such as Economist Douglas Jay, who publicly urged that the party should drop its "class image" and "nationalization myth" and even consider...

The orders are pouring in so fast that Ford last week made plans to shift over its Metuchen (N.J.) Mercury plant to produce Ford's Falcon and the new Comet, scheduled to make its appearance next spring. Ford will not cut back on Mercury -other Mercury plants will take up the slack. It just needs a third production facility to turn out all the compacts the U.S. public apparently...
...company's postwar problems was frozen foods. General Foods had carried the burden of the industry for years without making a penny of profit, but World War II shot the industry's business up to 1 billion Ibs. in 1945. Suddenly the get-rich attractions were so strong that fly-by-night outfits rushed out poor-quality products, gave frozen foods a bad name with the public. Result: the "Great Blood Bath," in which dozens of companies folded. General Foods confidently rode out the storm, turned the profit corner for good as the public regained confidence...
