On the 25th of October last young Strout stood at the window of his room on the second floor of Appleton Hall. A piece of coal weighing one pound was thrown through the glass, striking him in the eye, causing a serious wound. ...trial of Bowdoin students for hazing began at Portland yesterday. Testimony was given against the men on trial by Gen. Chamberlain that they had visited Strout's room to get cider. Three freshmen also testified to the defendants coming into their rooms and compelling them to read Latin, play on the flute and subjecting them to other indignities...
