...couldn't stop looking at your cover picture. I didn't dwell on the disturbing gauze mask the bombing victim was holding to her face, but I was struck by the astonishing compassion of the man helping her. For every stone-cold killer, there is an equal and opposite force for good...

...Prado Museum houses artwork dating only until the mid-nineteenth century. Its existing collection is certainly nothing short of impressive—greatness covered every inch of the innumerable walls. In fact, the vast quantity of paintings by the old Spanish Masters, El Greco, Goya, and Velazquez, particularly struck me. El Greco’s “Crucifixion” was moving, Goya’s “Shootings of the Third of May” chilling, and Velazquez’s “Las Meninas,” the museum’s obvious jewel, breathtaking...

...embarked on a search for “Guernica,” which led me to the nearby Reina Sofia Museum. Merely 5 feet 4 inches tall, I gazed up at almost 12 feet of canvas. The painting left me dumb-struck as it brilliantly resonated with a passion, power, and emotion as if it were a living thing. The mission began with at least one anomaly when, at the moment of launch, a piece of foam broke from the insulation on the giant external fuel tank and struck the left wing of the ship. "We spent a goodly amount of time reviewing the film [of the launch] and analyzing what that might do," says shuttle program manager Ron Dittemore. "From our experience it was determined that the event did not represent a safety concern...

...weeks and months to come, other, less likely scenarios will be examined too: a meteor or other piece of space debris could have struck the spacecraft, a growing risk given the decades of accumulated orbital junk that clutters the near-Earth environment. In this case, that's not likely, since the shuttle was already well into the atmosphere when it disintegrated. Age or metal fatigue could have been responsible as well. All four orbiters were temporarily grounded last June when cracks were found in their liquid-hydrogen fuel lines, damage that may have been caused by vibration, temperature changes...
