Marilyn Sokol (Gittel, Sender Shlamazel, Yenta Pesha) is a performing genious as far as bawdy presentational exhibition is concerned, and Charles Levin (Gronam Ox) knows how to sing and strut mock arrogance and hammed idiocy as well as anyone. Remo Airaldi, with a stout frame assisting, caricatures overweight kids and clever petty thieves with equal virtuosity. So why are they only supporting performers...
Until recently, renegade presidential guards zealously protected the grounds from outside inspection. Now the deserted grounds are controlled by rebels who are more tolerant of visitors. As the boom of mortar fire echoes through the surrounding hills, an eerie calm has descended on the mansion. Half a dozen peacocks strut nervously along the garden wall. Inside the house -- a spacious three-story villa of chandeliers and Art Deco furnishings -- papers and clothing litter the floor, presumably from a search for cash or documents. ...show. Attempts at more elaborate illusions such as Henrik's cello synchronization with the orchestra are better scrapped simply to preserve more sustainable disbelief. The costumes are stunning and the sets all but professional. Great care is taken of affect educated English accents (by some) and to otherwise strut and behave like European aristocrats. But then the impact of successful flourishes like the impressively choreographed waltzes at the opening and closing curtains are diminished by unnecessary distractions like the loud shuffling of the dancers' feet out of time to the music...
