...Sugar would clearly have ramifications. Florida Crystals, the agribusiness controlled by the well-wired Fanjul family, would be all that's left of Big Sugar. Founded by General Motors executive Charles Stuart Mott in the Everglades back in 1931, U.S. Sugar currently produces 9% of America's sugar - thanks to a massive federal water-control project that its executives helped design and a lucrative federal sugar program that artificially boosts its prices. The company has always been popular in its headquarters of Clewiston ("The World's Sweetest Town"), but labor activists have accused it of mistreating its workers and environmental...
...late-night TV, they created or inhabited recurring characters who had five minutes to establish themselves. Even the most amusing of these characters, if they were to be expanded, were suited more to half-hour sitcoms than to feature films. But that's where the Blues Brothers, the Coneheads, Stuart Smalley, Pat, Mary Katherine Gallagher and the Roxbury guys went, not always justifying their films' running time. Leaving SNL for movies means you can't go back, which deprives the show of some brilliant sketch talent - Dan Aykroyd, Joe Piscopo, Martin Short, Molly Shannon, Dinitra Vance, the irreplaceable Phil Hartman...
...Feminism is a kind of liberalism, and liberalism has an inherent dilemma regarding diversity. In the spirit of progress feminism feels justified in dismissing its critics—which is another reason for refusing to argue with them...
...exclusiveness there will be. Other liberals are not so harsh in their thinking, but they do little to counter feminist intolerance. These liberals are not about to institute affirmative action for conservatives. They let things slide. They do not see that, in our time at least, the diversity John Stuart Mill prized does not come about automatically. The case for affirmative counteraction does not rest so much on the injustice done to conservatives, which liberals take lightly, as on the restoration of Harvard’s academic integrity...
...This time there's no bloodletting, partly because Meera and Dev are both Hindu, meaning that a hasty marriage can be arranged. It's India, 1955, after all - still an ultraconservative country. Even Meera's bullying dad Rajinder, a hard-line atheist and ostensibly a progressive who quotes John Stuart Mill and owns a company that publishes pamphlets about India's nascent freedom struggle, encourages the union. But the consequences for Meera, enacted over a quarter-century - and some 450 densely imagined if often plodding pages of her diaristic flashbacks - are unhappy indeed...
