After seeing the original cut only once, Orson Welles wrote a 58-page "memo" to Universal Studios head Edward Muhl detailing the mauling the studio had done to his film. Buried for 40years, the "newly-discovered" memo provided the basis for the restoration effort, now the fourth incarnation of the film. Originally 95 minutes, Touch of Evil now runs for 111 minutes, three more than the previous version. In addition to eliminating several scenes added by the studio, the current version restores originally cut footage and re-edits several scenes for a total of about 50 changes in the film...
...made in the restored version is the elimination of the credits and the overlaid soundtrack from the famous opening shot. The brilliant oscillation between the simple continuity of a single shot and the complexity of the choreography creates a sense of tension now unburdened by surface distractions. Without the studio veneer, the probing camera and the cacophonic textures of street noise achieve a phenomenal depth that truly captures the oddly discontinuous sensation of shifting through space...
...Disney studio chief Joe Roth insists he isn't bugged by the DreamWorks strategy. "I think Antz will come out and do fine, and I think Bug's Life will come out and do fine," he says. But Disney and Pixar apparently are not speaking with one voice on this topic. In fact, Jobs has irked his Disney partners by speaking to reporters without consulting them. Roth has asked Jobs to tone down his anti-DreamWorks rhetoric, without much luck. Jobs declines to comment...
Ironically, Disney's toughest competition may not come from Antz. The studio is pushing A Bug's Life back from Nov. 20 to Nov. 25--not, according to Roth, to move another week away from Antz but to avoid going mano a mano with Paramount's Rugrats, the movie version of the popular children's TV show, which opens Nov. 20 and is expected to be a powerful contender in the intense holiday family-entertainment race. But that move to Nov. 25 puts A Bug's Life in direct competition with Universal's sequel to the popular pig movie, Babe...
...produce a paragraph about an actor living in Montana (CTRL, Mont) or a starlet claiming she still thinks of herself as ugly (SHIFT, What, me sexy?) for the magazine profiles he writes. But McInerney's characters haven't grown up since Bright Lights: instead of going dancing at the Studio 54 successor Limelight, they go to the still newer club, Chaos; instead of doing cocaine, they do ecstasy. Looking great at 43 and still the party boy of the tabloids, the likable McInerney may be the Dick Clark of literature...
