...problem is making felons out of everyone who is here without documents. What people miss is that includes 1.6 million children. Who thinks of this crazy stuff? These measures are just horrendous. We've taken enough bad-mouthing from these talking heads on radio and TV. If this House bill passed, I would be a criminal. And I wouldn't stop what I'm doing, so I'd be one of the first people arrested. This is no longer just an immigration issue. It is a civil rights movement...

...Michael Crichton's early stuff especially, like Case of Need, which he wrote while he was in medical school, and then The Andromeda Strain, of course, were big influences. I think anybody who is writing in the genre owes a lot to Robin Cook and especially to Coma. Actually, before I started writing Isolation Ward, I was reading a lot of Chandler and Hammett and tried to bring sort of a noir sense to Isolation Ward. Doesn't a 9-to-5 workday sound quaint? It's true. The world is just so pressured. Look at the generation we're creating, with Survivor and all that stuff. You're supposed to outwit everybody and double-deal. Nine to Five was trying to bring a female sensibility to the corporate world, which can really grind you down to nothing...
