People made decisions about it without even hearing what I really said. It was a double entendre. I did much worse stuff on my TV show. Slim-Fast knew who I was when it hired me and made its move without having the facts. Everyone else made the decision to back away, including Kerry and Edwards. It's indicative of what's wrong with our party. Like President Clinton said: You can't win unless you stand up for your convictions...

This is mostly human-interest stuff--The Godfather Returns is more cannolis than guns. The original book was gorgeously pulpy and trashy; it was only on film that it became a work of high art. (Like Michael, Coppola was the one who tried to take the family legitimate.) Winegardner may have gone too far in that direction; his Godfather feels prim and cultured. There's not enough blood and wine in its veins, or on the walls for that matter. It's too personal--what happened to strictly business? --By Lev Grossman

Assomeonewhomostlyvotesrepublican, I want to think that only one side takes part in voting shenanigans. But as an intelligent American citizen, I know that the "funny stuff" is probably pretty evenly divided. I believe people should vote because they've educated themselves on the issues, and are ready to make an informed choice, not because election-year propaganda has told them what to do.
