Even as Edwards lost one primary after another last winter, his charm on the stump wowed the Washington political establishment--some of whom predicted Kerry would never pick a running mate who was so certain to upstage him. And Edwards already is, managing to put more punch into a single sentence than Kerry can in an entire paragraph. Kerry has a tendency to describe the contrast between Bush's foreign policy and his own with a thicket of civics-book phrases like unilateral, multilateralism, community of nations and America's relationship with the world. But at the Democrats' first rally...

...reality has been the tougher foe. On Friday, for example, the Republican-dominated Senate Intelligence Committee found the President's two main arguments for war in Iraq to be faulty: no WMD, no collaborative relationship between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda. Bush was forced to acknowledge on the stump that "stockpiles" hadn't yet been found, but he and especially Vice President Dick Cheney seem reluctant to abandon the Saddam-al-Qaeda fantasy. The consequences of Iraq-including the Administration's approval of the use of torture on enemy combatants-have sapped the energy of Bush's re-election campaign...

Poor delivery did not stump Joe L. DiMento ’05, who turned in a fantastically humorous performance as Steve, Gabe’s coworker and friend at SkyMall. DiMento, who is also a Crimson editor, was the single gem in company of roughs, stealing the show with effortless style. While Mason’s Christine was intriguing, it was difficult to get past the tongue blips that marred the easy confidence of her character. Flood was merely adequate as Gabe, failing to deliver a convincing portrayal. An amusing performances bu Ari D. Brettman...

...high, though, and getting higher. The most obvious way for Kerry to clear it is by exploiting his record as a Vietnam War hero--something that Kerry often talks about on the stump but that Democratic polling suggests is still largely unknown to voters. Curiously, though, Kerry isn't leading with that punch in his ads. Many Democratic allies were dismayed when they got a look at the two 30-sec. spots that marked the $4.5 million launch last week of Kerry's national advertising campaign. Instead of a reprise of the well-received biographical ads that helped bring Kerry...

...stodginess is compounded by the Senator's public performances. In an effort to seem positive, he has removed the "Bring It On" red meat from his stump speech and replaced it with Spam. It is not uncommon to see audiences leaving his fund-raising events in droves while he is still speaking. Often he'll talk about the need for a new style of campaigning, a "conversation" with the American people, and then he'll proceed to relaunder a list of Democratic nostrums ("Health care is a right, not a privilege") that were cliches when Dukakis slogged the trail. There...
