STEEL ARENA. A bunch of stunt drivers tool around the back country risking their necks for the breezy hell of it, living out some shabby fantasy of success. The drivers are all portrayed by real stunt drivers, which gives the cast a unifying verisimilitude and a certain brazen clumsiness in the expository scenes. These are scant, presumably because everyone is more comfortable behind the wheel. But even the various automobile stunts begin to lose their punch the third time around. SEARCHES AND SEIZURES is so unmistakably a contemporary title, that it isn't hard to imagine it as an untactful publicity stunt meant to cash in on some recent political practices. Even if that accusation is true, this powerful collection of three short novels deserves every bit of attention it can get. The title does, after all, describe the book perfectly; the three novellas are linked thematically by it. More precisely, it is the breaking of search and seizure laws. He presented Billie Jean with a large Sugar Daddy sucker ("for the biggest sucker in the world"); the stunt had Billie Jean's full cooperation, since it reportedly earned each a fast fat $20,000. King responded by giving Bobby a live baby pig, appropriately named Larimore Hustle...
Sean followed Francis in name and profession. He served an apprenticeship as stunt man, grip, cameraman and finally director. At first he was merely a foreman, grinding out bathetic stories of cowpokes in leather and gals in gingham. But with The Iron Horse (1924), Ford was abruptly thrust into the front ranks of American film makers. In the tale of a son's search for his father's murderer, Ford composed a stark sagebrush Odyssey that was to echo in almost all his later work. The forces of nature and fate were given substance; the backdrop of plains...
