...guilty pleasure of a juicy contention is only one reason to visit, however. Behind the south wall of the monastery is another: a beautiful path lined with prayer flags that leads to the stupa and a quiet meadow beyond. Some flags are printed with prayers to bless the dead, others with prayers to increase prosperity and happiness for all living things...
...tale seclusion. By the time we finally crest a prayer flag-festooned summit and drop into the valley below, it's late afternoon. Beneath us are the handful of dwellings that shelter Yubeng's 65 ethnic-Tibetan inhabitants; in the crook of a slim, glacial stream, a white, sagging stupa glows in the low sunlight. But if not, UNESCO and other international do-gooders in the heritage field stand ready to voice their objections. Besides, Borobudur is different. It exerts a powerful influence all its own. The stupa is the closest thing this fractious archipelago nation has to a unifying emblem. I have yet to visit an island in Indonesia, from the Indian Ocean to the fringes of Oceania, that doesn't have a Borobudur Restaurant. If there is any symbol in this divided land that could bring people together...
