...young black businessmen, none of whom had ever published anything in his life. They were brought together one evening in Harlem 18 months ago at a "black capitalism" meeting sponsored by the Wall Street brokerage firm of Shearson, Hammill. This week the result is on the newsstands: Essence, a stylish monthly magazine for black women...
Taut and literate as Shaffer's entertainment is, it could have been merely another of those theatrical arabesques that fade as quickly as the footlights. Two things redeem it from such slickness. The stylish gusto of Baxter and especially of Quayle give the whole performance an edge that could cut glass. Moreover, Shaffer manages deftly to satirize the detective genre at the same time that he constructs a classic model of it. His satire brings out a hint of desperation behind the characters' capering. Ultimately his sport is directed against the games-playing mentality itself, with its retreat...
...envisioned that the courtroom would be something like Boston Music Hall, allowing for many spectators. In fact, it was a scant thirty by forty feet, with stylish wood paneling and an attractive skylight overhead. In the musical version we do not get Bates and Redgrave-and we don't get their characters either. Instead, Georgy gives us two actors, Dilys Watling and John Castle, who dress like their film...
...attempts to recreate Georgy Girl's stylish London also fail. Jo Miclziner's sets have no unity and seem rather a grabbag of Sean Kenny schtick with a few Oliver Smith staircases thrown in. Patricia Zipprodt-the best costume designer in the business-has managed to add to the trampiness of Meredith by giving her a succession of booker-ish rather than Mod-ish outfits. Peter Hunt's staging is in the best Hot Spot tradition...
