Some problematic trends have emerged—or perhaps re-emerged—during this year’s Oscar season. For one, the Foreign Language Film situation has turned into an abysmal nightmare. Each country can submit only one film to be “considered,” and the nomination process is comparable to a police manual, with strange rules about the nationality of the creative talent, where the film was shot, and when and where it opened. Because the submission process is so labyrinthine, films like Almodovar’s Bad Education, Kar-Wai Wong?...
Amazingly, simple ignorance on the part of professors can be blamed for some of the prices. Many simply submit lists of readings to the Coop or Digital Print Services, which, in turn, deal with acquiring the appropriate copyrights, and pay little regard to the bill to be passed on to students. According to an undergraduate this semester, one professor claimed to be “shocked” and surprised by the high price of a coursepack in response to a complaint about the matter. But this reaction occurred after the term had already started when nothing could be done...

When a friend rang to check on the case, she was told that the agent had failed to file the evidence and was no longer with the firm. The tribunal rejected the man's claim...
Mental health aside, students also need to know their grades as soon as possible for numerous practical reasons. Many applications for summer internships and other programs are due at the end of January, and usually require fall semester grades. Even if students can submit grades as a late supplement, doing so may decrease their chances of acceptance. Besides applications, knowledge of grades is needed for financial reasons: many scholarships are contingent upon the grades received each term, and lower drivers insurance is available for (documented) high-performing students. And in terms of coursework, knowing...
