...ultimately sell a three-bedroom ranch-style unit. When the buyer of the home later became insolvent, Hillary and her husband Bill Clinton bought the property out of bankruptcy and resold it in 1988 for $28,000 to its present owner. Last month the Justice Department began to subpoena documents pertaining to sales of Whitewater lots. But a well- placed real estate source in the region says investigators are unlikely to find records of the initial transfer of the Clintons' model home. "It was all done on unrecorded contracts," says the source, who suspects that the house changed hands several...
Kassebaum's decision followed testimony of another woman Packwood had assumed was in his corner. Last week Cathy Wagner Cormack, his secretary of 24 years, testified that Packwood had altered portions of his diaries, which she transcribed from audiotape to paper. The Senate ethics committee subpoenaed the diaries in October -- a move that Packwood has been fighting in court. Cormack told committee lawyers that something was amiss after Packwood took the tapes from her this fall. "When they were brought back to my possession, after he had taken them," she said, "I just . . . I sensed that there might have been...
...Packwood's diaries be brought to him for safekeeping. Packwood's new lawyer, Jacob Stein, acknowledged that his client had made some alterations. Stein complained that the inquiry keeps expanding "like a balloon." Asked he: "Where is the end of it?" Not in sight. Already looking into charges of sexual misconduct, intimidation and influence...
After receiving testimony that Senator Bob Packwood had tampered with his private diaries, lawyers for the Senate ethics committee last week insisted that a subpoena for them be enforced. A secretary who used to work for Packwood said in a deposition that the Oregon Republican altered tapes and tape transcriptions that the Senate has subpoenaed as part of its investigation into Packwood's alleged sexual misconduct. Packwood apparently made the changes before the subpoena was issued. The tapes and transcriptions have now been placed in the custody of a federal judge, and the court is expected to rule...
When Jay Kim won election, of course many of my acquaintances made cute jokes about my election to Congress. After the series in the Times, I again became the butt of jokes. My colleagues at work served me with a fake subpoena. At a party, a friend made a big show of putting plastic handcuffs on my wrists. And I once again began to get those knowing smiles and astonished looks when I was introduced to strangers...
