After the trawler had been towed backward for about a mile, a periscope shot out of the water just astern of it. Then the submarine surfaced, black and wet, but with no identification marks whatsoever. Skipper Hamnen and his 40 crewmen reckoned that it was a Soviet sub, but tried shouting in Norwegian anyway to the seamen who began appearing on its deck. There was no response. Said Hamnen: "I guess they weren't too eager to talk with us. After all, it's pretty dumb when a modern submarine gets caught up in a fish...
Norwegian navy headquarters in Oslo confirmed last week that Skipper Hamnen's big catch was a Soviet sub: a 360-ft. nuclear-powered hunter-killer of the "November" class. Trouble-ridden from the time they were first commissioned in 1958, November-class subs have rarely shown their periscopes outside Soviet waters since one sank off the English coast in 1970. Besides, the submarines-famed for their noisiness-are absurdly easy to detect. When they dive, observes one Norwegian navy officer, they sound "like the flushing of an antique toilet." The sub involved in the Sjevik incident was not even...
Possible Compromise. Another issue is supplemental unemployment benefits (SUB), which combined with regular unemployment compensation provide laid-off workers with as much as 95% of their customary take-home pay. The SUB funds, which are stocked by management contributions, ran out at GM and Chrysler during the recession. Some senior workers who were laid off later got nothing because payments to younger employees who were idled earlier had depleted the kitty. The union will likely ask for higher company contributions to the funds; a possible compromise would be separate funds for junior and senior union members...
...intense was Bayi's desire to stave off Walker's onslaught on his record that he had been rising before dawn each morning at the Tanzanian training camp near Mount Kilimanjaro to take a brisk, eight-mile jog through the chill highlands air-at a formidable sub-six-minute-mile pace. Later in the day, after calisthenics and a rest, the slightly built (5 ft. 9 in., 135 Ibs.) miler would run to the point of exhaustion. Unlike the notoriously roistering Walker, Bayi does not smoke or drink, and, while training, he tucked himself chastely into...
...took many blacks as counselors, notably Urban League Executive Director Vernon Jordan, and Congressman Andrew Young, who represents a mostly white Atlanta district. When asked recently to whom he owed anything. Carter replied: "Andy Young." The list stopped there. Carter has promised to appoint blacks to Cabinet or sub-Cabinet jobs; if they are willing, Young and Jordan may well be offered high posts in any Carter Administration...
