Prosecutors claim that police surveillance established Berenson's complicity with the left-wing guerrilla movement shortly before she was arrested on Nov. 30. When police raided her house in a Lima suburb hours later, they found it packed with heavily armed MRTA guerrillas. In the ensuing shoot-out, two rebels and one police officer were killed. The military terrorism court, where judges and other personnel wear masks, imposed a life sentence, ignoring the prosecutors' recommendation of 30 years in prison. Berenson will serve the term in a notoriously tough maximum-security prison reserved for terrorists that is located high...

These days, there are enough African Americans on the air to make prime time more integrated than the average suburb, but the "colored on TV" instinct lingers on. It helps to explain why such a run-of-the-mill movie as Waiting to Exhale is a box-office hit. For many blacks, especially women, the film version of Terry McMillan's best-selling 1992 potboiler about lonely, frustrated black women and no-good men has become a catalyst for discussions about sisterhood and relations with the opposite sex. SARAJEVO: In the worst attack since the October 12 truce in Bosnia, one man was killed and at least 19 others wounded when a grenade exploded in a Sarajevo street. A NATO official said the grenade was launched from the Serb-held suburb of Grbavica. The grenade struck a streetcar and tore a foot-wide hole in its roof as it was traveling down the Sarajevo's main boulevard, dubbed Sniper Alley during the war. NATO officials, who Monday pledged to use significant force if necessary to enforce Bosnia's peace, had no imediate response beyond condemning the incident. Although...

Speaking as someone who grew up in a wealthy suburb of New York City, I have had the experience of living in a homogeneous and sheltered community. It has been truly vital for me to have taken residence in Cambridge and to be surrounded by communities which are rich and diverse and in which people of different incomes and classes interact, communicate and associate as neighbors. I would hate to see class barriers become strengthened around me; it would be an even more tragic loss to our local communities and to their residents. It would be a great misfortune...

VOGOSCA, BOSNIA: NATO troops fired the first hostile gunfire of the Bosnia peacekeeping mission Friday as they defended a wounded Italian military engineer. Corporal Elio Sbordoni was shot in the arm by an unknown sniper who fired on a hotel complex housing Italian soldiers in Vogosca, a Serb-held suburb of Sarajevo. The gunman escaped. NATO officials, who define a 'firing incident' as five or more shots fired in succession, are counting roughly 400 such incidents per day in Sarajevo...
