...Customs officials found the garage of Millie McKee, a divorcee living in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City, stuffed with high-tech gear. Charged with illegally exporting laser components and sophisticated electronics to Switzerland, where authorities believe it was transshipped to the Soviet Union, McKee was given a six-month work release sentence for making a false statement. She described the crime as "all technical violations," like driving 60 m.p.h. in 55 m.p.h. zones. "There's been little fear of heavy sentences. It's more often a slap on the wrist," says Robert McDiarmid, a Santa Clara County private...

...latest, and perhaps the last, chapter in what must rank as the most bizarre search of the century began two weeks ago in a small Bavarian town in West Germany. It quickly led to a Brazilian suburb where, amid a tangle of documents, false names and controversial clues, there emerged the strange tale of friendship between a quiet Austrian couple and the reclusive man who had lived under an assumed name in a modest bungalow. After three days of surveillance, the police raided the house and took in for questioning Bossert, 59, an unemployed paper-company technician, and his wife, 57. Inside the modest wood-and-concrete house, they reportedly found several photographs, apparently of Mengele. One picture was of his son Rolf. Also found was a book entitled Evolution of the Organism that included 15 pages of notes in what is believed to be Mengele's handwriting...

...amicable morning-show encounters took place against a grim background of continuing questions about what really happened on July 9, 1977, in a Chicago suburb. A dazed and injured Cathleen Crowell, then 16, told police she had just been raped and cut with a broken beer bottle by a young man in a car. Dotson was subsequently convicted of the rape and given a 25-to-50-year sentence. In March, Webb first told Illinois authorities that her accusation had been false, and then surfaced on Today, insisting that she had made up the story out of fear that...

When a car bomb exploded on March 8 in a Beirut suburb, killing more than 80 people and injuring 200, there was little doubt as to the attack's target. The detonation took place just 50 yds. from the home of Sheik Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, spiritual leader of the Hizballah (Party of God), a militant pro-Iranian Shi'ite group. Several of Fadlallah's bodyguards were among the victims, but the sheik, who was in a nearby mosque, was uninjured. No one ever claimed responsibility for the incident...
