Pained by earlier scenes of violence, I started asking myself those questions and set about trying to answer them. To a son of Chinese immigrants raised in suburban Boston, Israel was some country in the Middle East with a terrorism problem, Palestine something found only on outdated maps...

...sound tracks of South Pacific and The Pajama Game on the hi-fi with his parents: "The music, our shared affection for it, became a private language of the afternoon, a whole vocabulary of joy." But when Rich was seven, his parents split up, a stigmatizing act in 1950s suburban Washington, D.C. His mother was remarried, to a volatile lawyer who beat Rich and broke her down into sad resignation. As he sought the escape of the theater, Rich's love of the stage flowered--abetted, ironically, by his stepfather, who subsidized his trips to new shows in Washington...

...Shoes occupy a peculiar niche in the fashion world. Evoking equal parts Sex Pistols and Maxwell Smart, these funky, thick-soled shoes are attracting punk rockers, swing dancers, bikers and ravers, along with suburban teens. How Westland went was how Michigan went - and this year Michigan is crucial...

Joel Stein's commentary on his experiences in Australia during the Games, "Canada with an Accent" [NOTEBOOK, Sept. 25], was the most insulting article I've ever read. The underlying prejudice and ignorance of this supposedly humorous piece were staggering. To categorize all Australians as "wussy suburban beach lovers" is as ignorant as it is tasteless. Perhaps the reason Stein decided to link Canadians and Australians is that we are both friendly and accepting peoples, characteristics Stein apparently lacks. Shame on Stein for writing such trash! And on TIME for printing it! DAWN VERHEYLEWEGEN Calgary, Alta...
