Politicians often succumb to the constant pressure for a stirring personal anecdote. During his abortive run for the presidency in 1987, solidly suburban Senator Joseph Biden appropriated scenes from the coal-mining boyhood of British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock. To make a point about welfare dependency, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said his sister was once so dependent on handouts she would get "mad when the mailman [was] late with her check." ...congealed into a deep gloom as headlines warned of the coming "Great Depression." The government that for so many decades guided the economy with an iron hand is floundering, seemingly at a loss for ways to yank the country out of its tailspin. Kazumi Ehara, an auto salesman in suburban Tokyo, speaks for many of his countrymen when he says, "The Japanese people have been told repeatedly by the government that the economy will get better, only to be betrayed. ...talented Ang Lee directs this film about uneasy family relationships in the restess, promiscuous 1970s with crystalline precision. As the leaders of two archly funny but disturbingly bleak suburban clans, Kevin Kline, Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver give refreshingly honest performances, but the film's ending offers their characters no hint of redemption. The ice storm, as a natural symbol of change and the wiping away of sins, is like Noah's flood without the rainbow...
