There are probably no deep, dark secrets here, just as there is nothing lethal in the culture of San Pedro High, which is no more and no less troubled than the average suburban high school. It is ethnically mixed yet relatively strife-free, with aging buildings and overworked but enthusiastic teachers, many of whom attended San Pedro themselves. The school has been touched by drugs, guns and gang violence, but teachers believe the worst problem is kids who come from troubled and broken homes, kids who cannot or will not communicate with their parents, kids who seem unable...
...Dawn develops a crush on the town hunk and lead singer of her brother's band (Eric Mabius), her attempts to dance along to his crooning while sitting on a parked car epitomizes her utter awkwardness. The song written to celebrate the Wiener parents' anniversary is a tribute to suburban mediocrity, and the last shot of the film, which has Dawn singing her school anthem, bewilderedly, along with a busload of her classmates/tormentors, evokes the inevitability of Dawn's niche in the junior high universe: for every cheerleader, punk, and student council president, there needs to be a wiener...
Todd Solondz's "Welcome to the Dollhouse" is still one of the most imaginative comedies in the theaters today, a carefully observed tour-de-force of detail and character sketch that will seem eerily familiar to those of us who served our time in suburban public schools. The fact that Solondz is a new filmmaker-- "Dollhouse" received the highest possible prize at this year's Sundance film festival-- gives hopes that the unevenness of this film will balance out into a smooth, steady vision in future films...
...Atlanta's status as a suburban, almost rural city means that it does not have as many cultural amenities as one might expect, it makes up for that with natural resources. Indeed, the Interstate City is an eminently comfortable place in which to live, and houses on pleasant, leafy streets can be found, at relatively low prices, within a 10-minute drive of downtown. Hills, lakes and mountains are only 25 minutes away, and, at a phone booth, a flyer advertising for a roommate states matter-of-factly, WANTED: MALE TO SHARE RUSTIC 75-ACRE FARM W/STABLE AND LAKES...
...most urban and suburban Americans, home treatment systems probably aren't worth the hassle or expense, say independent experts. "In general, the greater risks lie in small community developments like trailer parks that opt not to be part of the water supply of a larger municipality," says Daniel Okun, a retired professor of environmental engineering at the University of North Carolina. "The point is to find out what's going on in your local water supply...
