...filmmaker can do two cool things with genre conventions: honor them or subvert them. He can praise or bury them. Duelist tries both. It is simultaneously an evocation and an interment of the martial arts film. Lee?s cunning management of crowds and his spectacular use of camera and setting lend to this live-action film the aesthetics of anime. At times the film stops in wonder at its own devices. Which is a shame, since Duelist is so smart and pretty, it doesn?t to tell us how much it admires itself. The movie?s preening is demeaning...

Whatever the appropriate relationship between politics and aid, the U.S. should not use its aid to subvert democracy. A troubling precedent was set just before the legislative council election, when USAID expedited several programs (and suppressed its own publicity requirements) in order to allow Fatah to take credit for last-minute municipal improvements. ...helmets became virtual hostages to the Serbs and an excuse for Europeans and Americans not to use real force lest the peacekeepers be hurt. The collapse of international law and civil behavior, and the failure of the U.S. or Europe to do anything effective to stop the killing, helped subvert the idea that the world had made much progress toward the higher brain. The feckless sighing and the elaborate international shrugs that masked themselves as realism were somehow worse than plain indifference. It was against all the usual inclinations of the war devils that these four men took what must...

...world, but I would probably kill myself if I was in a relationship with him, because he's just that type of guy. He's going to be thinking of himself first. But guys are raised to think that way, just like women are raised to kind of subvert their feelings. What I think of [Jeffrey] as is this kind of manly man, but he does have a sensitive side that he only shows to Sara...
