...poem by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), the opera was derided by Addison in The Spectator for its "Painted dragons spitting wildfire, and enchanted chariots drawn by Flanders mares." But its lush melodies were just what the public wanted: it became the first real operatic hit in English history. Its success won Handel a ?200 annual pension from the crown...

...almost 50 remaining years of his life, Handel (who became an English subject) turned out 39 Italianate operas, which shaped English operatic style for a generation, and almost singlehanded gave a new, dramatic shape to oratorio style. A shrewd businessman, he combed Italy for singers, scored such a success with famed Soprano Francesca Cuzzoni -described by one listener as having "a nest of nightingales in her belly"-that she sold out a benefit performance of his Ottone at a top of ?50 a seat...

...Post's bold policy has brought big success-at least in New Guinean terms. Today the company pays a 10% dividend to investors, has assets of $270,000. Last week it let a $22,500 contract for a new brick headquarters. In Port Moresby's bureaucratic circles, the Post may not be as popular as it is among jungle tobacco hounds, but the saucy voice of New Guinea is never ignored. Membership tends to be listless: last year the Portland (Ore.) local lowered its attendance quorum to 10% to get legislation out of indefinite hock. In the last twelve years the Guild has added only 6,560 new members, has made little or no effort to plaster the gaping holes in its ranks, e.g., such traditional holdouts as the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Milwaukee Journal, the Detroit News...

Porgy and Bess is only a moderate and intermittent success as a musical show; as an attempt to produce a great work of cinematic art, it is a sometimes ponderous failure. The fault is not entirely Producer Goldwyn's. The original Broadway musical ('TIME, Oct. 21, 1935), a good try at the great American folk opera, is troubled with an awkward, ill-paced plot-the last act falls flat because all the best tunes are used up in the early part of the show. The libretto, by Charleston-born Novelist DuBose Heyward, is full of the sort...
