Your spoken-word interpretations of "Rocket Man" and "Common People" with Ben Folds have become YouTube classics. How did this musical career begin? I did an album 40 years ago that was a mixed success, both creatively and critically. But out of it came a concept of how to do songs and how to make the poetry of the lyrics resonate, as a nonsinger. Instead of singing, holding the note, you can use the rhythm of the words to indicate the emotions - whether it's Sarah Palin's meanderings or Shakespeare. Well-written words are music...

...Afghanistan and Vietnam - no matter how expertly executed - can't be won unless local people have a true stake in the operations. McChrystal's new fighting strategy - to separate and protect instead of kill, to understand motivations rather than employing brute force, to supplement instead of micromanaging conditions for success - is a step in the right direction. ...initially a massive success and Hasbro expanded the line throughout the '60s, reimagining Joe as an astronaut, a deep-sea diver and a Green Beret. But outcry over American involvement in Vietnam dampened enthusiasm for a camo-clad action figure, so Hasbro gave Joe an honorable discharge. It redesigned the toys and relaunched them in 1970 as Adventures of G.I. Joe: the figure received lifelike hair, moveable eyes and a "kung-fu" grip, enabling him to hold onto objects for the first time. But the changes proved to be a gimmick, taken even further by Hasbro with the development...

...Soon, though, the debate will get back to the plans' central flaw. From Berlin to Baltimore, government subsidies to boost car manufacturers hit by the recession have been a huge short-term success. But where will the consumers come from when the government aid runs out? "These scrapping schemes bring forward sales that would have occurred later," says Tim Urquhart, automotive analyst at IHS Global Insight in London. "They are just deferring the pain...
