Brunei's sudden defection came after weeks of cliffhanging negotiations between Malaya's shrewd Prime Minister Tunku (Prince) Abdul Rahman, father of the federation scheme, and Singapore's brilliant, mercurial Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
