That sign was recently displayed at a Students United for Desert Storm (SUDS) rally on the same grass where once walked Ralph Waldo Emerson, author of the immortal words "Whosoever would be a man must be a nonconformist."
SUDS raises the dark spectre of accusations of treason upon those who have reservations about the war. "USA," they say, "Love it or leave it." We offer a third alternative--improve it.
As for the holder of the "masculine American man" placard, he is a prominent member of Students Against War in the Middle East (SAWME), and it was clear to those present at the rally that he was not there to express support for SUDS and SUDS' views.
We have no problem if The Crimson wishes to disagree with us or with the policies SUDS advocates. However, we firmly believe that the place to express such disagreement is in editorials or opinion pieces, not in deliberately slanted accounts of events.
