Raisa. Even in this semienlightened age, prominent women are somehow reduced to first names: Maggie, Cory, Nancy. Yet, despite her visibility, Raisa Gorbachev remains a riddle inside an enigma wrapped in sable. Is she the witty, cosmopolitan muse of glasnost, as some Westerners who have met her suggest? Or is she a hard-line ideologue, as others report? At a dinner with ^ the Reagans during the 1985 Geneva summit, Raisa launched into a lengthy and pedantic monologue on Soviet policy. After the Gorbachevs left, Nancy Reagan may have spoken for the other guests when she fumed, within hearing of then...

...women would suggest that Raisa sets a realistic standard for the future. Quite the contrary. The hopes and dreams of most Soviet women in fact sound startlingly unemancipated to the Western ear. They rarely challenge the status quo, which entitles men to be waited on, first by their mothers, then by their wives and female employees. Nor do women question the concept that they should assume responsibility for all child-related matters, whether that involves family planning, child rearing or, if a marriage breaks up, child support. ...inconsistency" of supporting both E4D and the Class Gift, Warren is just plain dumb to suggest that it is shown false by the mere fact that some people don't care whether their actions have consistent justification. People do things they can't justify; the doing doesn't substitute for justification. And of course those in charge of E4D would rather have students give to both funds than only to the Senior Gift; self-defeating ideological purity ill serves everyone's interests...

Another autoimmune disease, myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disorder that afflicts 15,000 Americans, is caused by antibodies that attack vital links in the nervous system, and leads to gradual loss of muscular control. Initial studies suggest that small doses of cyclosporine may be effective in blunting the symptoms of the disease. Some researchers, however, are searching for a more selective remedy that involves mass-producing antibodies that are specific to one antigen. These so-called monoclonal antibodies are designed to immobilize only those B cells that produce the antibodies responsible for the disease...
