Wood admits her findings need to be replicated. But these preliminary results have far-reaching implications for everything from advertising to substance-abuse treatment. The findings suggest that when everything seems uncertain and awful, we may be most primed to undertake positive changes in our lives. Want to start exercising more or drinking less or getting off drugs? Maybe you should think about a new city, a new home, or at least a new routine...
...other CIA memo, dated June 3, 2005, claims Mohammed divulged crucial information about a plot to crash commercial airliners into Heathrow airport. But the same memo notes that "uncharacteristic for most detainees, [Mohammed] almost immediately following his capture, elaborated on his plan to [attack Heathrow]." This could suggest he gave up the information before he was put on the waterboard. But as with much of the eagerly anticipated documents, its meaning is anything but clear. Which means that far from ending the debate on whether harsh interrogation worked, the inspector general's report and CIA memos have simply provided more...
...Some of the Mr. James criticism, however, seems a little thin. One comment on Facebook says that because Mr. James wears the same clothes every day in August, it might suggest that foreigners are "unclean." If we're going to look at the clothing choices of fast-food icons, it seems fair to point out that Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders have been wearing their famous uniforms for half a century. There's no doubt that the spectacle of the foreigner in Japan is an everyday occurrence in media. A foreigner's response that he or she can use chopsticks...
...does this relate to the economic collapse we've been living through? Was it a result of some of these excesses? I wouldn't pretend it all boils down to the fact there are a lot of M.B.A.s running around. But I think it's reasonable to suggest all this phony expertise and credentials were a layer of fat or parasitism on top of the overall economy. Some of these people learned how to extract profits at the expense of the system as a whole...
...Defenders of the harsh interrogation - notably Cheney - claim it yielded a rich vein of information, possibly including details of imminent attacks on the U.S. homeland. But tantalizing references to the IG's findings contained in the now infamous "torture memos" by the Bush Administration Office of Legal Counsel suggest that interrogators didn't get much actionable information out of the detainees. Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said last week that the truth lies somewhere in between: that the program achieved "modest success" - providing the agency with useful information about al-Qaeda organization and leadership, but not necessarily information about attacks...
