...opposed Bush's pork-stuffed energy bill, which Obama supported. He also opposed efforts to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and until recently opposed new offshore drilling. But now that gas prices have spiked, McCain is running for President on a drill-first platform, and polls suggest that most Americans agree with him. It's sad to see his campaign adopting the politics of the tire gauge, promoting the fallacy that Americans are powerless to address their own energy problems. Because the truth is: Yes, we can. We already...

...research would suggest several other options are possible. Studies show that the right combinations of testosterone and a progestin can successfully and reversibly suppress sperm production in most men. Though a combination oral birth control pill wouldn't work - the necessary testosterone would get broken down too quickly in the liver - researchers have developed several other delivery methods: monthly injections, creams and twice-a-year synthetic implants into the arm. None of these birth control methods are as convenient or noninvasive as the Pill for women, but they are as safe and as reversible...

...worse off than those who never enjoyed those benefits at all; or perhaps the emotional toll of losing a close partner damages cognitive functions in a way that puts these people at greater risk for dementia and Alzheimer's down the line. Either way, says Hakansson, the results suggest that "if you are looking for interventions to prevent Alzheimer's, one way may be to identify people who have been divorced or widowed, and who haven't adapted or gotten back into the social circle, and give them support with the aim of giving them new structure and social networks...

Theirs is a tale of dislocation and suffering of which few Australians have more than the sketchiest knowledge, yet it's hardly stretching things to call these women the mothers of a nation, or to suggest that it was partly through their struggles that elements of the archetypal Australian character were forged. Testament to how blurred this chapter of history has become is the difficulty curator Gay Hendriksen had in sourcing items for an exhibition which, though three years in the making, is a trifle light...

Based on some intriguing preliminary studies in animals, J. Timothy Lightfoot, a kinesiologist, and his team at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, suggest that genetics may indeed predispose some of us to sloth. Using mice specially bred and selected according to their activity levels, Lightfoot identified 20 different genomic locations that work in tandem to influence their activity levels - specifically, how far the animals will run. Lightfoot's team is the first to identify these genetic areas and the first to figure out that they function in concert. The researchers say the areas they found on the mouse genome...
