Compared with the swaggering Sukarno, whom he replaced last year as Indonesia's top man, General Suharto is a cautious and colorless fellow-which is just what Indonesia needs. He rules Indonesia with such quiet modesty and attention to detail that his advisers have been constantly prodding him to make more speeches and exert more power. Last week Suharto showed that he can act as forcefully, if not as flamboyantly, as Sukarno. In what he mildly called "a redressing," he announced his first big Cabinet shakeup, a move that consolidated his own power and clearly reflected his confident control...

...really wanted, she kept saying, was to be able to return to her beloved husband, Indonesia's deposed President Sukarno, 66, but the forces of evil have conspired to keep them apart. While she waited, Ratna Sari Dewi, 27, the Bung's fifth wife, has been living in Tokyo for ten months, but now even Japan has become unbearable. It was in a locked cabinet, and the keeper of the key was old Father Sukarno, 66, who was still mad enough about being deposed that he refused to hand it over. President Suharto even sent a delegation out to the Bung's "retirement" villa at Bogor to appeal to his patriotic sentiments. Nothing doing, said Sukarno: "This is my flag. My wife made...

Many converts are disillusioned ex-followers of Communism, and the highest conversion rates occur in areas that, before Sukarno's downfall, were most heavily infested with Reds. Says a Baptist missionary in Djakarta: "When Communism failed in its promise to provide these people with an inner conviction, they switched to Christianity." Less sanguine, some church leaders suspect that all too many of the converts have switched less out of faith than fear; public opinion still links atheism with membership in the banned, decimated Indonesian Communist Party...
