...fight was actually precipitated two weeks ago, when Israeli gunners shot down an Egyptian Sukhoi 7 reconnaissance plane because, they said, it had flown over Israel's fortified Bar-Lev Line on the canal's east bank. Egypt retaliated by sending SAM missiles aloft to knock down an aging SA-2 transport, which Israel said was flying several miles away from the canal. Seven men were killed when the Stratocruiser crashed in the Sinai desert, 15 miles from the waterway. Israeli Phantoms avenged them by raking Egyptian positions near the west bank with rockets. It is the first Sukhoi to fall into Western hands-and its capture is a coup of considerable significance. The Israelis acquired the Sukhoi as the result of sheer luck. Its Egyptian pilot bailed out after the plane was hit over the Giddi Pass in Sinai. The Sukhoi then made an unbelievably smooth belly landing in the soft, flat sand. Trucked away under camouflage nets, it was quickly made flightworthy. Israeli...

...Israeli armored unit of 150 men ferried across the gulf in landing craft, spent ten hours shooting up troops, bases and radar installations with utter impunity along a dusty strip of Egyptian coastline. Not until two days later did the Egyptians reply by sending swarms of MIG fighters and Sukhoi bombers aloft, but Israel's air force quickly routed them...
