...Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut last week joined the conservative Media Research Center in urging the networks to clean up the so-called family hour, the first hour of prime time each evening. President Clinton and Vice President Gore have both embraced the V chip and called for a summit meeting on TV violence with top network and cable executives at the end of February. The antinetwork rhetoric from many reformers sounds strikingly like that directed against another industry charged with making a harmful product. "The TV industry has to be socially responsible," says Harvard child psychiatrist Dr. Robert Coles...
PARIS: Richard Holbrooke Thursday tried to lower expectations that the weekend summit of Balkan presidents in Rome might produce any dramatic results. U.S. and NATO negotiators are trying to lower tensions sent sky high after the detaining of four Serbs the Muslim government accuses of war crimes. Briefing American reporters in Paris, Holbrooke said at least one hoped-for result would be a further clarification of the new 'rules of the road' governing the conditions under which NATO troops would take part in tracking down and arresting suspected war criminals. "The point of these rules of the road," Holbrooke said...
WASHINGTON, D.C.: In a move to stay on top of an increasingly unstable political situation in Russia, Secretary of State Warren Christopher will meet Russian leaders next month, and again in March, in anticipation of a Clinton-Yeltsin summit in April. Christopher will fly to Helsinki on February 9 for talks with new foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov, a hardliner who recently replaced reformer Andrei Kozyrev. TIME's Bruce Nelan reports that a series of similar retrenchments on Yeltsin's part has "many people in Washington very worried about the course Yeltsin seems to be taking. Though some at State believe...
President Clinton and Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, House Speaker Newt Gingrich and House Majority Leader Dick Armey will hold a budget summit at the White House Friday. Talks got back on track after White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta met Thursday with Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. John Kasich, the chairmen of the Senate and House Banking Committees. House Republicans have said that they will not pass a continuing resolution to end the partial federal shutdown until the budget deal is completed...
...BOSNIAN PEACE TALKS NEAR DAYTON ENTERED THEIR third week, much of the civility that had been evident in the summit's first days was gone. In its place, a kind of diplomatic cabin fever set in and provoked the delegates to carp about the character flaws of rival countries' Presidents: the crude belligerence of Croatia's Franjo Tudjman; the manipulative arrogance of Serbia's Slobodan Milosevic; the maddening--and seemingly willful--indecisiveness of Bosnia's Alija Izetbegovic. The resignation of Foreign Minister Muhamed Sacirbey suggested that tensions had grown within the Bosnian delegation. To escape the pressure, the Croatians flocked...
